Camping Commitment Statement

As a follower of Jesus Christ and a minister of His gospel, model a full understanding of Young Life’s ministry strategy and equip and lead a team of staff in providing excellent camping experiences for individuals to encounter Jesus Christ and know the truth of God’s love for them.

Mission & Authority

Through both continued training and direct experience, lead staff and prepare an environment where guests, staff and volunteers are well cared for using the cornerstones of cleaning, stocking and laundry. This is a role that oversees all of the Housekeeping department: staffing and development, cleanliness standards, scheduling, administrative needs and budgeting.

Essential Duties:

Spiritual Formation: Intentionally provide opportunities for staff to grow deeper in their relationship with Jesus.

  • With direction from supervisor, develop an annual personal spiritual growth plan.
  • Foster an environment where department staff have opportunities for ongoing spiritual development, including execution of their personal spiritual growth plan.
  • Create a culture that honors the ministry of housekeeping.

Attentive Hospitality: Equip servant leaders who anticipate and respond to the needs of our guests, staff and vendors, through Christ-like service.

  • Establish a department posture of service that anticipates guest needs and responds with professionalism through intentional decisions and systems.
  • Establish efficient systems to prepare spaces for guests’ arrival.
  • Manage Laundry systems to serve work crew, summer staff and campers.
  • Ensure that all guests and other departments on camp are shown care and hospitality from the Housekeeping department.
  • Establish and manage organized Lost and Found system so as to return items at highest possible rate.
  • Maintain extensive expertise on safety and sanitation both for prevention of sickness and quick response to situations.

Interpersonal Relationships: Help build relationships that reflect the character of God with guests, staff, vendors and neighbors to foster healthy community.

  • Maintain relationships with the network of Housekeeping Supervisors at various Young Life Camps.​
  • Demonstrate awareness of the development needs of Housekeeping team.
  • Partner with Assigned Team and families to help them with ministry goals while at camp.

Comprehensive Stewardship:Manage with integrity the finances, people, buildings and equipment that have been entrusted to our ministry.

  • Develop and equip staff to participate in comprehensive stewardship of housekeeping.
  • Maintain and care for supplies and equipment within housekeeping, including purchasing in a cost-effective manner.
  • Utilize the LINK to schedule DIN, routine tasks, and preventative maintenance.
  • Create and manage the financial budget for housekeeping department.
  • Perform regular linen inventory to maintain an accurate amount and quality of linens and identify any potential laundry system issues or failure.

Talent Development: Through a consistent and accountable evaluation process, we identify and provide opportunities for staff in continuing education, leadership development, career-pathing and cross-training.

  • Demonstrate a desire to grow through engagement in the Individual Development Plan process and participation in training and development opportunities.
  • Foster department staff participation in the Individual Development Plan process as well as other training and development opportunities.
  • Intentionally pursue opportunities in mission leadership, personal growth, and development.
  • Utilize good hiring and onboarding processes for all housekeeping staff.
  • Train and supervise volunteers and staff.

Embracing Excellence: Standing on the platform of national standards and metrics we gladly prepare an environment that glorifies Jesus Christ.

  • Lead department staff in the execution of daily responsibilities with attention to the standards and metrics required for excellent camp operations.
  • Ensure that inventory levels of all supplies are at levels to meet guest needs.
  • Maintain the quality of decor, products and services that we provide to our guests.

Training Expectations:

  • Regular participation in Young Life trainings and department opportunities.

Camp or Job Specific Working Conditions:

  • Hours will include evening and weekend shifts.
  • Working conditions will include lifting up to 50 pounds, squatting, kneeling and ladder use.
  • Participate in camp events which will include outdoor work environments.
  • Proper knowledge and use of cleaning chemicals.
  • Some travel required.
  • The Housekeeping Supervisor is a significant leadership role on camp, with regular oversight of staff, interns, and housekeeping work crew to accomplish the task of continually preparing every space on camp for kids to hear the gospel. During the school season, this would involve leading year-long interns through weekly turnover of camp, a crucial professional and spiritual development opportunity. This position would report to the Guest Services Manager and would partner closely with the Guest Services team.
  • Young Life's Lake Champion is located in Glen Spey, New York, in the rural valley between the Catskill and Pocono Mountains. Camp is 90 miles from New York City, 30 minutes from conveniences like Walmart, Home Depot, fast food options, and sit down restaurants, and 5 minutes from a local deli, gas station, and Dollar General. Camp housing may be available, as a large percentage of staff live on the camp property.
  • Due to the somewhat remote location of camp, community is an important part of life here. Staff at Lake Champion are invited to participate in a "missional community" - a Christ-centered community that exists for those outside. Working and living life with many of the same people presents opportunities for rich growth and community, as well as unique challenges. Opportunity also exists for community outside of camp, with neighboring towns 30-45 min. away.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • College degree or equivalent preferred.

Qualifications and Experience Required for the Job:

  • Fluency with Microsoft Office applications and an ability to learn and use all Young Life internal systems.
  • Experience in training and leading teams preferred.
  • Demonstrate professionalism in written and verbal communication with guests, vendors and staff.
  • Demonstrate understanding of Young Life ministry, strategy and mission.
  • Previous housekeeping or hospitality experience preferred​.

Responding to the unexpected needs of a guest in a prompt and professional manner is important. All staff members are expected to represent Young Life positively and professionally within the community and be able to work with and minister to the volunteer high school and college-age young people who attend our camp.
