Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO)

Mission & Authority:

The CHRO is responsible for leading and shaping a values-driven culture of commitment and accountability, trust and transparency, and diversity, equity and belonging. Through servant leadership, develop and implement all aspects of talent management for the entire organization; influence the overall organizational strategy; lead, shape and execute HR policies around the globe; oversee the execution of all relevant HR sub-functions; exhibit exceptional communication skills; and embodies the values of Young Life with the highest standard of ethics.

Essential Duties:

  • Offer trustworthy and informed recommendations to the President/CEO, Mission Lead Team (MLT), and board of trustees on critical human resource issues.
  • Coach Senior Level staff including MLT as appropriate.
  • Advise, guide and instruct on material matters regarding Human Resources matters, ensuring compliance, soundness and missionwide consistency with Young Life’s values, governing laws and regulations.
  • Build, lead and transform Young Life’s Human Resource function in ways that create trust and transparency and improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the global ministry in partnership with key leaders, while adhering to our mission, values, and historical methods.
  • Take a lead role, along with the President/CEO and MLT, in shaping the culture of Young Life to ensure the realization of our vision and execution of our strategy.
  • Develop and implement processes and tools for clear performance management and goal setting with the purpose of improving focus, alignment and ownership of missionwide goals on all levels.
  • Develop and influence the implementation of effective strategies and procedures for recruiting, hiring and on-boarding to ensure a steady pipeline of called and talented staff and volunteers.
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of a talent and succession management process that ensures a missionwide pool of candidates for key leadership roles throughout the ministry.
  • Identify and benchmark consistently the areas of improvement across key Human Resource functions, maintaining the highest levels of compliance and cost-effectiveness.
  • Provide leadership oversight of employee relations, including all employment policies, disciplinary procedures and actions, terminations, performance management and employment litigation.
  • Partner with the Learning and Leadership function to ensure clear strategies and tools for personnel development, especially key leadership development for the growing global mission.
  • Work closely with the Vice President of Diversity, Belonging and Strategy to be a champion for improving diversity, equity and belonging across the mission, so that our team inside the mission reflects the young people we are called to reach.
  • Serve as the primary executive liaison with the HR sub-committee of the Board of Trustees, leading that committee in conjunction with the committee chairperson during regularly scheduled board meetings, and other ​ ad hoc interactions throughout the year.

Qualifications:

  • Committed follower of Jesus Christ and an active member of the local church.
  • Agrees in whole with Young Life’s Statement of Faith and Faith and Conduct Policy.
  • Loves young people and exhibits a passion to reach them with the gospel.
  • Senior Human Resource Executive with more than ten years of business and Human Resource leadership experience in a large, growing and preferably global organization.
  • Demonstrated success in building and leading a world-class Human Resource organization, including all relevant HR sub-functions, and being seen as a valuable business partner to senior leadership.
  • Experience and expertise in shaping a values-driven culture to ensure realization of vision and execution of strategy throughout the organization.
  • Experience with not-for-profit sector, either as an employee or as a volunteer, board member, founder or supporter.
  • Strong business acumen, interpersonal skills, team-building skills, analytical and problem-solving skills, along with exceptional ability to influence without authority across a global organization.
  • Experience working with various employment laws and regulations across states and countries.

Working Conditions:

  • This position is located in Colorado Springs, Colorado at the mission services and global headquarters.
  • This leader should expect to travel up to 30% of the time as he/she interacts with our distributed staff, volunteers and various stakeholders.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Master's level training preferred.
