Camping Commitment Statement

As a follower of Jesus Christ and a minister of His gospel, lead from a mastery-level understanding of Young Life’s ministry strategy and ensure that all camp staff are supported and equipped in providing excellent camping experiences for individuals to encounter Jesus Christ and know the truth of God’s love for them.

Mission & Authority

Through both formal training and direct experience, learn how to effectively carry out and manage the responsibilities of the role of Senior Director of Camping Learning & Leadership. This position is responsible for the operation, development, and support of camp staff training. This position functions as a team member with the Camping Leadership Team. This position partners with the Camping Leadership Team, Mission Learning & Leadership, and mission leadership to respond to the current camping needs of the field and the strategic development and identification of future needs.

​Essential Duties:

Mission and Methods:

  • Help ensure the health, safety and security of all guests and staff as the Mission, Vision, Values and Methods of Young Life are supported within the Camping Department training plan.

Spiritual Formation: Intentionally provide opportunities for staff to grow deeper in their relationship with Jesus.

  • Demonstrate a deep relationship with Jesus, a commitment to spiritual formation, and an understanding of your personal ministry to others.
  • With support from supervisor, develop an annual personal spiritual growth plan by utilizing the Vocation Formation process for yourself and ensure that all staff are developing annual spiritual growth plans as well.
  • Provide opportunities for ongoing spiritual development, including execution of their personal spiritual growth plan, for camp staff.
  • Provide resources and opportunities for camp staff in regards to spiritual formation.
  • Call staff and volunteers to the common vision for individuals to encounter Jesus and know the truth of God’s love for them.
  • Uphold and live out the CLT covenant commitments and practices.
  • Perform sacerdotal duties, as appropriate.

Attentive Hospitality: Equip servant leaders who anticipate and respond to the needs of our guests, staff and vendors, through Christlike service.

  • Create training opportunities that model professionalism and hospitality.
  • Create resources that ensure a culture of service and facility preparation that anticipates guest needs and responds with professionalism through intentional decisions and systems.
  • Provide and accommodate for diverse learning styles, varied modalities, and learner-centric resources.
  • Demonstrate an understanding that hospitality is an essential role of the Camping department.
  • Support training of customer experience at all camps for any operational issues discussed and acted upon by the Camping Leadership Team.
  • Oversee the vision for Camping Department learning and leadership competencies and ensure they are focused on equipping staff to serve as kingdom leaders.

Interpersonal Relationships: Help build relationships that reflect the character of God with guests, staff, vendors and neighbors to foster healthy community.

  • Support the building of relationships that reflect the character of God with guests, staff, vendors, and neighbors to foster healthy community.
  • Ensure camp staff demonstrate the importance of their interpersonal relationships with guests, staff, vendors, and neighbors and promote a healthy community.
  • Develop strategies to solicit feedback from the Camping Leadership Team, Camping Services, and Camp Managers to evaluate the needs of the department.
  • Build and equip a team that reflects the worldwide body of Christ.
  • Collaborate with Mission Services and Field Operations to enhance quality assurance and provide training opportunities to the field, as they directly relate to the mission’s camping strategy.
  • Collaborate and project manage alongside the Camping Leadership Team, Camping Services, and Camp Managers to develop a pipeline of staff who are equipped and interested in pursuing advancement opportunities within the department.
  • Collaborate with Learning and Leadership to implement mission training vision and models to equip staff.
  • Participate with national leadership and peers in training events and opportunities.

Comprehensive Stewardship: Manage with integrity the finances, people, buildings and equipment that have been entrusted to our ministry.

  • Facilitate a team of varied positions, tenure, and locations to steward development opportunities and vision for camp staff. (Training Advisory Board, Camping Services subject matter experts, etc.)
  • Implement and enhance the total camping department training plan with goals and objectives to reach across all departments.
  • Solicit feedback on training events from camping leadership and participants.
  • Maintain resources for camp staff and supervisors to be able to discuss and document career, training plans, and individual development opportunities.
  • Through the CLT, uphold the vision and purpose of Young Life through maximizing the strategy of camping.

Talent Development: Through a consistent and accountable evaluation process, we identify and provide opportunities for staff in continuing education, leadership development, career-pathing and cross-training.

  • Demonstrate a desire to grow through engagement in the Vocation Formation process, the GPM process, and participation in training and development opportunities.
  • Foster involvement in the Vocation Formation process, as well as other training and development opportunities.
  • Identify and develop staff suitable for additional leadership opportunities.
  • Intentionally pursue opportunities in mission leadership, personal growth, and development.
  • Execute the recruitment, hiring, and onboarding process for building diverse and qualified teams to support this position. Support the department with resources to do the same.
  • Work with the Senior Vice President of Camping to establish Camping Leadership Team meeting and training schedules and associated agendas. Partner with the Camping Services leadership to enact the vision and direction given by senior leadership for Camping Services.
  • Train, or arrange training, for pilot programs for moving the vision of camping forward.
  • Identify resource staff within the department to further the training program and then train these individuals to be trainers for the department.
  • Ensure completion and documentation of annual performance evaluations and salary reviews with all staff.

  • Design a yearly schedule of training opportunities and supervise their coordination and instruction.
  • Coordinate and work with the Senior Vice President of Camping to schedule periodic visits to camps, to be available to the staff and consult with other coordinators and managers.
  • Participate as a member of Young Life’s Camping Leadership Team and other mission responsibilities as assigned.
  • Participate with the Camping Leadership Team in formulating new policies and procedures for the department and obtain understanding, acceptance, and support of these policies and procedures.
  • Work with mission departments on the implementation of new development/training programs.

Job-Specific Working Condition​s

  • ​ Working in an office environment in Colorado Springs, Colorado or remotely.
  • Ability and willingness to travel at least 12 times a year.
  • This position has an anticipated salary range of $92,071-$127,500 annually depending on the relevant experience and education.

Qualifications:

Education

  • ​ Four-year college degree required.

Experience Required for the Job

  • At least three years of general management and supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge and effective involvement in ministry.
  • Pursue commissioning to best support the role.
  • Has proven leadership and relationship skills required to build a high-performing trusting team, communicate effectively, delegate responsibility and offer accountability.
  • Strong executive level communication capabilities (written and verbal) and ability to coach in these areas.
  • Demonstrate operational disciplines including prioritizing, analyzing data, and developing and executing systems.
  • Exhibition of a mastery understanding in the Young Life mission and camping operational policies.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work across multiple platforms.
  • Ability to think strategically to work up, down and across all areas of Young Life.
