Divisional Accounting/Finance Manager for Asia Pacific (APAC)

Mission & Authority

Young Life Asia Pacific seeks to reach kids with the Gospel of Jesus Christ in over eighteen countries. This position will serve on the Asia Pacific Service Team, providing oversight and management of accounting and finance for Young Life APAC. Ongoing responsibilities will include development and oversight of financial systems and controls, finance related policies and procedures, budgets and financial analysis/reporting, regulatory compliance, treasury, banking and finance organization professional development. Divisional accounting staff are supervised by country leaders, so this position will lead through influence rather than authority.

​Essential Duties:

Spiritual Leadership

  • Lead in a manner reflecting Young Life’s commitment for every staff person and volunteer to minister as a servant of God whose primary responsibility is proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Leadership of APAC Accounting and Finance

Recruit & Hire:

  • Ensure sufficient human resources are in place to effectively and efficiently support APAC accounting needs.
  • Assist divisional leadership in filling open accounting positions, including travel to local field offices to conduct onboarding and training of new accounting staff.

Train & Supervise:

  • Provide healthy oversight through scheduled interactions, ongoing coaching, monthly financial reviews and periodic face to face on-site visits.
  • Provide ongoing training and overall development opportunities of all APAC accounting and finance staff.
  • Support and assist divisional staff with accounting or financial issues arising within a country or region, including discernment of appropriate measures.
  • In collaboration with Young Life Human Resources address any disciplinary matters in a timely and appropriate manner.

Leadership of APAC Accounting & Finance Functions

Work with divisional and global leadership, including the Director of International Accounting, the Director of Accounting Operations and the Associate Director of FS Customer Care, to ensure the continued strength and sustainability of field accounting and financial functions, including standardized processes, internal controls, compliance with internal and external regulations, and management of external resources and relationships.

Standardized Processes:

  • Review and track monthly financial submissions from each country and prepare a status update to ensure each country has complied with necessary reporting requirements to receive wires.
  • Check month-end balances in all divisional accounts and submit any transfer requests necessary by standard monthly deadlines.
  • Manage funding allocations administered at the divisional level, including allocation of operating and camp funds sufficient to support ministry growth in each region.
  • Oversee financial integration when new legal entities are formed or existing countries are restructured, including completion of the Finance New Entity Checklist.

Internal Controls:

  • Continue development of financial controls over the use and movement of cash, direct bank transfers, wires, checks, debit and credit cards, mobile money, etc..
  • Ensure measures are in place for the safeguarding of non-cash assets, including computers or other equipment.
  • Discern, implement, and maintain proper measures to ensure adequate separation of accounting and financial duties exists in each country.

Internal & External Compliance:

  • In collaboration with Young Life Legal, catalog necessary corporate rules, regulations and filings in each country, maintain contact with associated regulatory agencies and ensure timely and accurate compliance with all requirements.
  • Work with Young Life’s Internal Audit department to develop a roadmap of audits and peer reviews.
  • Within the context of the Young Life Affiliation Agreement and related policies, design and apply appropriate internal controls and ensure compliance.

External Resource Management:

  • Ensure necessary external capabilities are in place. Assist country leadership in assessing, interviewing and maintaining external relationships, including banks, accounting firms and payroll providers.
  • Assist country leadership in the selection and appointment of external auditors for annual audits for statutory compliance and as part of financial oversight.

Leadership of APAC Accounting & Financial Intelligence

In collaboration with divisional and global leadership, build financial intelligence through budgeting, reporting and analysis, and training of both operations and field personnel to equip them to administer their current role, as well as prepare them for future advancement.

Budgeting

  • Oversee development, submission and administration of budgets for all mission units within the Division, including national and US based portions of said budget.
  • Use the budget process as a strategic planning tool in addition to being a financial control.
  • Monitor budgets over the course of the year through analysis of budget vs actual variance reporting, ensuring proper allocation of funds in accordance with approved budget.
  • Develop data analytics using ministry metrics to help monitor reasonableness of operational expenditures.

Reporting and Analysis

  • Assist in continued development of International Financial Dashboard with the objective of providing leadership with actionable metrics and analysis facilitating transparency, decision making and operational effectiveness & efficiency.
  • Conduct a monthly review of the International Financial Dashboard and Ministry Metric Dashboards, asking appropriate questions of field, operations and accounting staff. Summarize review for for Division leadership.
  • Prepare monthly Divisional cash flow forecast for both operations and camping, including what-if analyses and ad-hoc analysis requiring assimilation of data and information from various sources.

Financial Intelligence Training

  • In conjunction with Learning and Leadership, help divisional finance leadership identify and develop training and experience necessary to ensure field leadership has requisite financial skills.
  • Partner with the Divisional Director of Operations to help make continuous improvement in operations.

Measures of Success

  • The APAC Accounting & Finance organization grows in maturity, expertise and redundancy, providing for strong support of the ministry of Young Life APAC.
  • Strong interpersonal relationships exist in 360 degrees, with supervisor, direct reports, field staff and all other key stakeholders.
  • Accounting records are maintained and submitted in a timely, consistent and reliable manner ensuring consistency and accurancey of analytical metrics and financial classifications across the Division.
  • Timely identification and corrective action regarding breaches in internal control and/or material fraud.
  • External audit is performed with efficiency and with minimal Management Letter comments.
  • Internal audit is performed with efficiency and with minimal comments or noted areas of concern.

Job-Specific Working Condition​s

This position requires living in the APAC division, including extensive travel within the division and occasional travel to locations outside the division. The ideal candidate would live in Bangladesh, Philippines, Singapore, or Cambodia.​ Office environment if a local YL office has space, or work from home. An average of one week per month of travel is anticipated. In addition to direct reporting to the VP of International Finance, this position will require consistent communication and coordination with the Int’l Division Operations Manager.

Qualifications:

Education/Certifications

  • Undergraduate degree in accounting or finance.
  • Certified Public Accountant (or the local equivalent) preferred with five to ten years of applicable work experience, working in the context of a cross cultural and international organization.

Experience Required for the Job

  • A strong call to and passion for Christ-centered kingdom work and the Young Life mission.
  • Strong knowledge of international accounting principles, and experience in internal control design.
  • Ability to provide excellent service to stakeholders under pressure of monthly deadlines and multiple tasks.
  • Supervisory skills sufficient to effectively train, oversee, mentor and evaluate accounting personnel in multiple countries and locations.
  • Creative, independent thinker with a desire to learn, and an acute attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Exceptional communication (both written and oral) and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
  • Advanced knowledge and skill level in the use of Workday, Quickbooks, Excel, Microsoft Office Suite and the proven ability to learn new software and database programs.
  • Be a team player, work well remotely staying connected with a dispersed team in the US and in Asia Pacific.
  • Knowledge of Young Life practices and culture preferred.
  • Fluency in English and one or more APAC country languages.
