International Vice President of Human Resources

Mission & Authority

The Vice President of Human Resources –International is expected to collaborate with leaders within key centers of expertise at the Service Center and bring expertise to our field, camping, and mission services teams. Specifically, this role is responsible for advising and coaching staff and leaders to ensure that the mission’s International HR practices, policies and strategies are executed well and in alignment with Young Life’s Mission, Vision, Values and Methods.

​Essential Duties:

Spiritual Development — “Following Jesus” includes prayer and spiritual disciplines, fellowship, growth and health and church relationships.

  • Develop a yearly personal growth plan that fosters a vibrant spiritual life including time for solitude, retreat, reflection, study, prayer, and worship.
  • Ensure that all Young Life work is designed and carried out with an awareness of and in alignment with Young Life’s Mission, Vision, Values and Methods.
  • Develop strong spiritual disciplines and accountability considering possible distance supervision and travel schedule.

Human Resource Delivery

  • Build a strong relationship with international field, first by listening to the needs of each division and develop a plan to prioritize the needs.
o Advise, coach, and support leaders on HR processes, procedures and policies to drive standardization when possible and best practice in a global canvas.
  • Lead, shape, and advance Young Life’s culture and core mission. Be the visible, present “Culture Carrier.”
  • Cross-cultural collaboration and communication and be on the lookout for the “new” HR best practices as learnt from International innovations. (Contribute and grow what we already know and are doing by discovering what has not been exposed yet which is working).
  • Enhance cross-cultural collaboration, communication and knowledge sharing throughout the various divisions.
  • Support leaders in the entire employee life cycle including hiring, onboarding, terminations, offboarding, and conflict resolution processes
o Assist field with standardization of talent management process, behavioral based interviewing, and supervision related tool usage aligning with the different cultures.
o Provide coaching on the performance improvement process (PIP) and crucial conversations in support of reviews as required to support supervisors across cultures.
o Lead internal investigations in partnership with Service Center based SMEs (i.e. legal or audit).
o Support of employee relations matters in a timely manner demonstrating care through facilitation, advisement, and coaching leaders and staff.
​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ - Manage and administer employee relations, ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ ensuring proper retention of documentation ​ ​ ​ appropriate to the country of origin.
  • Working with the Division Lead Team, HR will provide strong problem to the field leadership (G’s, SVPs and VPs) through research, relevant SME expertise, and solutions.
  • Support leaders in building team cultures that foster a sense of belonging for all staff and where teams are both inclusive and diverse (generationally, ethnically, Country of origin and gender).
  • Understand the data – qualitative and quantitative – and work with leaders to develop strategies and action plans to progress diversity, equity and belonging for each Division.
  • Support the performance management and compensation processes as we move to bring clarity and understanding to the global ministries. (i.e., calibration, performance evaluations, reporting and performance/pay differentiation).
  • Provide performance management coaching to leaders for both improved and sustained performance and for development planning standard practices with appropriate cultural nuances to serve in the best way.
  • Manage communications between Service Center-based subject matter experts/COEs and mission leaders to deliver key messages and to ensure flawless execution of program rollouts that affect international. Identify local country point of contact to ensure understand and proper support is present.
  • Provide leadership coaching on workforce strategy and pipeline potential.
  • Support successful execution of on boarding and off boarding for leaders.
  • Proactively partner and collaborate across the Global HR Talent Organization, share information and provide thought leadership and a solution-oriented mindset.
  • With a holistic understanding of the YL mission & values and a collaborative approach, recommends, designs, implements and evaluates to maximize the KNOWN strategy.
  • Strong understanding of or leaning on external experts to assist in areas such as local employment, labor laws, and other critical compliance matters
  • Driving a “Total Mission First” mindset to ensure leaders and teams are working in an increasingly integrated way.
  • Lead and support the international mission with the use and understanding of Workday providing change management support, regular use, identifying changes needed and timely communicate to the HRIS team, etc.

Other Duties

  • Regularly support and encourage the spiritual needs of Young Life staff and volunteers through sharing God’s Word and your testimony
  • Engage in times of Bible study with fellow staff and volunteers
  • Engage in times of prayer with fellow staff and volunteers
  • Consider and incorporate God’s call to evangelism into every aspect of your responsibilities

Qualifications:

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree required, masters preferred.

Experience Required for the Job

  • 12+ years in a global HR generalist role or equivalent with progression of scope and responsibility, including team leadership experience required.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience serving as a Young Life staff member or volunteer required.
  • Significant expertise in HR technical proficiencies and core HR international competencies with experience in performance management, talent development, talent acquisition, compensation & benefits, coaching, employee development and driving sustainable process improvements.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information and maintain confidentiality with a strong sense of integrity and ethics.
  • Strong influential leadership skills and able to get things done without formal authority.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement and make decisions in a manner consistent with position requirements, local labor law and Young Life’s mission statement and values.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities.
  • Ability to execute initiatives in a timely manner with high quality.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and strengthen positive relationships within operational teams, the Service Center HR team, and legal partners, peers, and leaders across the mission.
  • Strong business acumen, leadership, integration, negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Continuous learner that is up to date on HR best practices and is able to complement current practices and processes, as well as implement new ways of thinking and doing things to help enable the mission.
  • PHR, SPHR certification desired.
