Camping Commitment Statement

As a follower of Jesus Christ and a minister of His gospel, demonstrate a basic understanding of Young Life’s ministry strategy and participate in providing excellent camping experiences for individuals to encounter Jesus Christ and know the truth of God’s love for them.

Mission & Authority

Through both continued training and direct experience, lead staff and prepare an environment where guests, staff and volunteers are well cared for by preparing a distraction free environment for kids to encounter Jesus Christ. This is a support role that works with the Sites and Facilities Superintendent to learn and help lead all aspects of the Landscape Department.

Essential Duties:

Spiritual Formation: Intentionally provide opportunities for staff to grow deeper in their relationship with Jesus.

Comprehensive Stewardship:Manage with integrity the finances, people, buildings and equipment that have been entrusted to our ministry.

  • Develop and equip interns and volunteers to participate in comprehensive stewardship of the landscape and grounds at camp.
  • Schedule fertilizing, aeration and mowing.
  • Develop and maintain irrigation systems.
  • Develop and maintain a preventative maintenance program for landscape and farm operations.
  • Provide input in the development of a landscape master plan.
  • Perform landscape and preventative maintenance tasks as assigned.

Talent Development: Through a consistent and accountable evaluation process, we identify and provide opportunities for staff in continuing education, leadership development, career-pathing and cross-training.

  • Demonstrate a desire to grow through engagement in the Individual Development Plan process and participation in training and development opportunities.

  • Execute daily responsibilities with attention to the standards and metrics required for excellent camp operations.
  • Provide care for the turf (top dressing, fertilizing, aeration, etc.).
  • Provide care for the plants and shrub (pruning, planting, fertilizing and herbicide).

Training Expectations:

  • Participation in individual development trainings.
  • Participation in PACE Calls that align with the individual’s IDP and Spiritual Development Plan.
  • State licenses with pest control and irrigation as required.

Camp or Job Specific Working Conditions:

  • This position requires that the staff person be able to: lift at least fifty (50) pounds of materials waist high, operate mowers, tillers and other equipment necessary for landscaping and lawn care, stand on his/her feet for at least eight hours a day, bend, twist, carry and do other physical activities necessary to perform this job.
  • The majority of the job will take place out of doors, and the staff person will be exposed to heat, cold and various climate conditions as well as dirt and chemicals used in landscaping.
  • We are looking for someone with at least two of the below skill sets:

​ ​ ​ ​ ​ — Ability/significant experience to operate heavy machinery for landscape projects and snow removal with a large portion of this job being and overseeing snow removal 6 months out of the year: Skid Steer, Loader, Grader, and Backhoe

​ ​ ​ ​ ​ — Experience in welding / metal work

​ ​ ​ ​ ​ — Experience in servicing / working on heavy machinery

​ ​ ​ ​ ​ — Ability to teach, lead, and perform maintenance projects during the school season

  • This position has an anticipated salary range of $14.42 - $17.72 per hour based on education and relevant experience.
  • In addition to COLA, this position is currently eligible for a monthly housing stipend.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • AA in horticulture.
  • Three years landscape experience or five years of experience in landscape care and design.

Qualifications and Experience Required for the Job:

  • Knowledge of area plants and shrubs highly desired.
  • Ability to oversee day-to-day maintenance functions, personnel and projects.

All staff members are expected to represent Young Life positively and professionally within the community and be able to work with and minister to the volunteer high school and college-age young people who attend our camp.
