Camping Commitment Statement

As a follower of Jesus Christ and a minister of His gospel, demonstrate a basic understanding of Young Life’s ministry strategy and participate in providing excellent camping experiences for individuals to encounter Jesus Christ and know the truth of God’s love for them.

Mission & Authority

Through both continued formal training and direct experience, lead staff and foster an environment where guests, staff, and volunteers are well cared for using the cornerstones of excellence and service. This is a support role that works alongside the retail manager to learn all aspects of the Retail Department.

Essential Duties:

Spiritual Formation: Intentionally provide opportunities for staff to grow deeper in their relationship with Jesus.

  • Demonstrate spiritual leadership by supporting spiritual health of department as directed by retail manager.
  • With direction from manager, develop an annual personal spiritual growth plan.

Attentive Hospitality: Equip servant leaders who anticipate and respond to the needs of our guests, staff and vendors, through Christ-like service.

  • Demonstrate a posture of service that anticipates guest needs and responds with professionalism through intentional decisions and systems.
  • Maintain professional written and verbal communication to serve staff, guests and vendors at camp.
  • Demonstrate customer care by assisting customers with inquires and product selection.
  • Show hospitality to all who serve and work within the department.

Interpersonal Relationships: Help build relationships that reflect the character of God with guests, staff, vendors and neighbors to foster healthy community.

Comprehensive Stewardship:Manage with integrity the finances, people, buildings and equipment that have been entrusted to our ministry.

  • Show competency in financial stewardship and integrity.
  • Develop and equip retail interns and volunteers to participate in comprehensive stewardship of retail centers.
  • Participate in system development for specific retail centers; including inventory management, order tracking, financial awareness [Concur], and retail center appearance.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in using Point of Sale [Square], Office, Outlook and other software applications required by manager.
  • Develop understating for equipment maintenance and operation as needed for retail centers
  • Participate in weekly Guest Group Information meetings; developing appropriate retail hours based on guest group history and requests
  • Utilize the LINK to schedule DIN, routine tasks and preventative maintenance.
  • Talent Development: Through a consistent and accountable evaluation process, we identify and provide opportunities for staff in continuing education, leadership development, career-pathing and cross-training.

  • Execute daily responsibilities with attention to the standards and metrics required for excellent camp operations.
  • Ensure that retail areas are clean and ready for guests.
  • Ensure that stock and supplies are at levels to meet guest needs and sales.
  • Assist in re-orders as directed by Retail Manager.
  • Receive merchandise for retail areas.
  • Demonstrate and train proper food handling and storage guidelines.
  • Assist in visual display of retail areas.

Training Expectations:

  • Participate in Young Life Pace Call trainings.
  • Engage with weekly camp meetings and spiritual development opportunities.
  • Maintain ServSafe and First Aid/CPR certifications.

Camp or Job Specific Working Conditions:

  • Hours will include evening and weekend shifts.
  • Working conditions will include lifting up to 50lbs, squatting, kneeling and ladder use.
  • Participate in camp events – which will include outdoor work environments.
  • Acquire proper knowledge and use of cleaning chemicals.
  • This is a split role working in retail and housekeeping.
  • This position will help lead year-long interns, volunteers, and facilitate turnover days.
  • The role will be a 70/30 split between housekeeping and retail during the school season months.
  • Our team splits in the summer to better lead each department’s volunteer help.
  • Either this role would be full time housekeeping or a 75/25 split favoring retail during the 2 months of summer. The retail manager would ultimately make this decision.
  • Young Life's Lost Canyon operates year-round with significant guest group usage from May - October, and steadily with weekend groups throughout the school season. Camp is located in Williams, Arizona, a small town that sits at about 7,000 feet elevation about 3 hours north of Phoenix, and about 35 minutes west of Flagstaff. Lost Canyon is a welcoming community with the majority of staff living off camp in surrounding towns. Northern Arizona is a spectacular place to live, with the Grand Canyon and Mt. Humphrey's about an hour away, along with many other outdoor recreation areas within a few hours.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • College degree or equivalent preferred.

Qualifications and Experience Required for the Job:

  • Experience with cash handling preferred.
  • Experience training and leading teams.
  • Demonstrate professionalism in written and verbal communication with guests, vendors and staff.
  • Demonstrate understanding of Young Life ministry, strategy and mission.

Responding to the unexpected needs of a guest in a prompt and professional manner is important. All staff members are expected to represent Young Life positively and professionally within the community and be able to work with and minister to the volunteer high school and college-age young people who attend our camp.
