Camping Commitment Statement

As a follower of Jesus Christ and a minister of His gospel, model a full understanding of Young Life’s ministry strategy and equip and lead a team of staff in providing excellent camping experiences for individuals to encounter Jesus Christ and know the truth of God’s love for them.

Mission & Authority

Through both continued training and direct experience, lead staff and prepare an environment where guests, staff, and volunteers are well cared for by preparing a distraction free environment for kids to encounter Jesus Christ. This is a role that works with the Sites and Facilities Superintendent to oversee all of the Landscape Department; staff & development, grounds & equipment, operations, budget and administrative needs for the department.​

Essential Duties:

Spiritual Formation: Intentionally provide opportunities for staff to grow deeper in their relationship with Jesus.

  • With direction from supervisor, develop an annual personal spiritual growth plan.
  • Foster an environment where department staff have opportunities for ongoing spiritual development, including execution of their personal spiritual growth plan.

Attentive Hospitality: Equip servant leaders who anticipate and respond to the needs of our guests, staff and vendors, through Christ-like service.

  • Establish a department posture of service that anticipates guest needs and responds with professionalism through intentional decisions and systems.

Interpersonal Relationships: Help build relationships that reflect the character of God with guests, staff, vendors and neighbors to foster healthy community.

  • Ensure department staff demonstrate the importance of their interpersonal relationships with guests, staff, vendors and neighbors and promote a healthy community.
  • Offer leadership and direction to those workers assigned to you.
  • Supervise staff as the Site and Facilities superintendent may assign to you (both summer and winter staff). This includes full and/or part-time property staff, in addition to summer maintenance staff, work crew, volunteers and other people who may be assisting with a maintenance or project function of the camp.

Comprehensive Stewardship:Manage with integrity the finances, people, buildings and equipment that have been entrusted to our ministry.

  • Manage with integrity the finances, people, buildings and equipment that have been entrusted to our ministry through Sites and Facilities.
  • Develop and equip staff to participate in comprehensive stewardship of Sites and Facilities.
  • Comply with the requirements of budgets supplied by the Site and Facilities Superintendent.
  • Assist in preparation of capital and operating budgets as requested.
  • Train crew members in proper operation and safety of all equipment on a seasonal or as-needed basis. Must be able to understand and follow OSHA required safe work practices including wearing job appropriate PPE.
  • Develop, implement and maintain an effective preventative maintenance program for grounds equipment, vehicles, tools and supplies.

Talent Development: Through a consistent and accountable evaluation process, we identify and provide opportunities for staff in continuing education, leadership development, career-pathing and cross-training.

  • Demonstrate a desire to grow through engagement in the Individual Development Plan process and participation in training and development opportunities.
  • Foster department staff participation in the Individual Development Plan process as well as other training and development opportunities.
  • Intentionally pursue opportunities in mission leadership, personal growth and development.
  • Work closely with the work crew and summer staff boss(es) in making the work experience a positive time of personal growth for the individuals who have volunteered their time.

Embracing Excellence: Standing on the platform of national standards and metrics we gladly prepare an environment that glorifies Jesus Christ.

  • Lead department staff in the execution of daily responsibilities with attention to the standards and metrics required for excellent camp operations.
  • Coordinate and execute landscape maintenance on a daily basis to keep the property in top condition.
  • Maintain all aspects of the irrigation system and install new irrigation areas as needed.
  • Design/order/install/maintain the turf, fields, shrubbery, flowers and all other landscape on the property.
  • Prepare and submit reports as the Sites and Facilities Superintendent and state/local government require.
  • Maintain operating records as required by the Site and Facilities superintendent. These include, but are not limited to:
    ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ — Landscape training and audit checklist.
    ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ — Grass cutting log.
    ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ — Preventative maintenance records for the grounds.
    ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ — Safety equipment records.
    ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ — Maintenance records for landscape and irrigation system, etc.

Training Expectations:

  • Required attendance to Young Life Camp annual department head meeting.
  • Participation in individual development trainings.
  • Participation in PACE Calls that align with the individual’s IDP and Spiritual Development Plan.
  • State licenses with pest control and irrigation as required.

Camp or Job Specific Working Conditions:

  • This position requires that the staff person be able to: lift at least fifty (50) pounds of materials waist high, operate mowers, tillers and other equipment necessary for landscaping and lawn care, stand on his or her feet for at least eight hours a day, bend, twist, carry and do other physical activities necessary to perform this job.
  • The majority of the job will take place out of doors, and the staff person will be exposed to heat, cold and various climate conditions as well as dirt and chemicals used in landscaping.
  • Applicant should be familiar with Microsoft Office applications. This position will assist with creating best practices and processes and complete documentation to ensure missional memory.
  • Applicants must be willing to work a revolving schedule which could include nights, weekends, and holidays as required according to the Guest Group calendar.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and take initiative in a fast-moving, dynamic environment.
  • Communicate well and partner with our local vendors to maintain and upgrade our facilities.
  • Addition responsibility will include assisting with Maintenance projects.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or related field.
  • Working knowledge of landscape design and care.
  • Ability to learn and adapt to new situations and technologies.

Qualifications and Experience Required for the Job:

  • Proven ability to communicate a sense of warmth, hospitality, and concern for all guests, vendors and staff.
  • Proven ability in training and leading teams.
  • Proven ability in organizing and prioritizing tasks.
  • Proven hands-on experience with a minimum of four years in the area of landscape development and maintenance, to include irrigation.
  • Positive, flexible attitude.
  • Knowledge of insect, pest, disease, weeds and their control.
  • Knowledge of trees, shrubs, perennials and annuals.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office applications and an ability to learn and use all Young Life internal systems.
