Description:
Young Life in France is looking for a teacher staff for our ministry in Lyon, the second largest metropolitan area in France. The opportunity is to join a team of local volunteers, led by a full-time American staff person with the support of a committee of locals, in the hopes of reaching more schools in our city. Teacher staff have the unique and privileged opportunity to work part-time in a local school and teach students a much-desired skill: English. We believe the experience of teaching in a French public school is like a rich cultural internship. Come be a part of making a kingdom-difference in the lives of French teenagers in Lyon!
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate spiritual leadership on a personal and professional level.
- Develop a community of French volunteer leaders to work with teenagers.
- Participate in dynamic direct ministry with French teenagers in French.
- Participate in staff and training events (in French and in English).
- Raise funds needed on top of wages earned from teaching.
- Participate in the TAPIF teaching program (www.tapif.org) at the secondary-school level. (Applications open in October; the deadline is mid-January. Placements are announced as early as April and as late as July. Arrival in France no later than mid-August.)
Requirement for the TAPIF program: Teach 12 hours a week (in English) at a local middle school or high school (English conversation and lessons on American culture). - Maintain professional relationships with the school principal as well as other teachers.
- Maintain confidentiality in an extremely secular country.
Qualifications:
- Curiosity, adaptability and open-mindedness regarding French culture, as well as an eagerness to learn.
- College degree required.
- Language school and/or a college degree (or minor) in French is highly preferred.
- For the TAPIF program: French-language skill level of B1 or better on the European Framework of Reference for Languages.
- For the TAPIF program: Experience living abroad is preferred but not required.
- For the TAPIF program: Teaching experience or a background in education is highly preferred but not required.
- Experience working with minors is required. Experience as a Young Life volunteer is preferred.
- Proven relational skills with both teenagers and adults.
- Strong written and verbal communication.
- Two-year commitment required.
