Mission or Student Staff (Part-Time) — Bloomington, MN

The ‘mission/student staff’ position in Young Life helps develop depth in ministry in a particular school or schools. An ideal mission or student staff candidate is skilled in relational ministry with kids and has the ability to develop teams of volunteer leaders and collaborate with adult committee members. Having significant autonomy, this person is adept at managing time and is a strong communicator.

Bloomington Young Life is looking to hire a part-time student staff to primarily serve high school students through:

  • Recruiting and developing a team of adult and high school leaders.
  • The planning and execution of Young Life club.
  • Managing annual summer and fall camp trips.

10-15 hours/week. Reports to a local area supervisor.

Responsibilities:

The role of the Young Life mission or student staff is a vital part of the area’s growth, development and sustainability. It is a place where you will be mentored by and share community with the area supervisor and committee. As you lead volunteers and reach out to students, you will also receive excellent training and development.

With the support of the partner area supervisor, this staff person will be expected to:

  • Participate in and lead dynamic direct ministry in the area (club, contact work, camp).
  • Recruit and equip a team of volunteer leaders who are committed to each other and to the ministry and who are growing in spiritual depth to plan and implement outreach ministry with excellence.
  • Work with the area supervisor to coordinate and lead camp trips (summer and fall).
  • Develop key relationships with adults in the Bloomington area including parents, teachers and community members.
  • Communicate ministry plans with area staff, volunteer leaders and parents.
  • Raise financial support as directed.

This role is intended for someone who has a heart for high schoolers and wants to work closely with local leadership to further develop the current Young Life ministry in the area.

Qualifications:

  • Experience as a volunteer leader within Young Life or other similar ministry context.
  • Proven relational skills in ministry with adolescents.
  • Mature and active relationship with Jesus Christ, part of a local church and living a God-fearing life in all areas in accordance with Young Life’s Faith and Conduct Policy.
  • Able to lead a team of people toward a common vision.
  • Demonstrates a level of teachability, humility and accountability to those who lead and follow.
  • Ability to have mentor relationships with kids of the same sex, while holding appropriate boundaries with kids of the opposite sex, and at all times caring about the safety of kids.
  • Demonstrates a desire to reach ALL KIDS and an ability to adapt ministry based on race, gender, identity, socio-economic, etc.
  • Proficient in communication: verbal, written, digital.

Over the past decades, Bloomington’s neighborhoods have become home to a variety of residents of diverse backgrounds, races and ethnicities. With two public high schools (9-12) and three middle schools (6-8), Bloomington offers an amazing opportunity to build a strong, sustainable and unified Young Life ministry for all the students of the community.

The Bloomington Young Life area currently has 10 volunteer leaders who know nearly 150 kids by name and is serving kids through a volunteer-led Young Life club. This is a unique opportunity to grow a significant ministry in a dynamic school district.
