Capernaum Coordinator —Tahoe/Truckee, NV

Tahoe/Truckee Young Life is looking to add a full-time Capernaum coordinator to join us to conduct a Capernaum ministry in a unique setting. An area director, committee, Young Life (YL) staff and volunteers are already in place to support the coordinator. This person will perform contact work in area schools and churches and develop relationships with current students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families. In addition, outreach to new students and families in the area to expand the ministry will be performed.

Background

Young Life is a Christian ministry that reaches out to middle school, high school, and college students in the United States and in more than 100 countries. Young Life employs individuals who profess a belief in Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord and who subscribe to Young Life's policies and Statement of Faith. The Tahoe/Truckee region has always had a reputation of drawing people from all around the world because of its unparalleled beauty.

Young Life Capernaum is a ministry for adolescents and young adults who have IDD. TTYL recognizes and celebrates the uniqueness of each person and believes that our friends with disabilities belong with their peers in being able to grow in their knowledge and understanding of the Gospel. Some Capernaum gatherings and clubs focus primarily on kids who have disabilities, but we also look to creatively include our friends with IDD in our mainstream gatherings and clubs. Typically, there are “buddies” who come alongside these kids for support and friendship.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead a spiritually healthy and inclusive ministry in which all those connected to Young Life Capernaum grow in their faith.
  • Develop key adult relationships within the TTYL community (parents, teachers, donors, committee, etc.).
  • Perform weekly contact work at multiple schools for students with IDD.
  • Work with the area director in leader recruitment and training, committee recruitment, fundraising events, leader care, and church outreach to cultivate an inclusive ministry.
  • Work with Capernaum sub-committees and leaders to grow and support ministry.
  • Recruit, train, and lead volunteer leaders and “buddies.”
  • Establish effective working relationships with parents; organize the ministry in a way that serves and cares for families of kids with IDD.
  • Develop and maintain donor relationships; manage personal fundraising.
  • Effectively communicate to all stakeholders.
  • Participate in relevant prescribed and elective training to enhance spiritual maturity and performance.

Qualifications:

  • Has a passion for working with kids with IDD.
  • Demonstrates Christian maturity and a growing faith.
  • Successful formation, training, facilitating, and support of a team and individual team members.
  • Planning, organizing, conducting, and evaluating clubs/camps for youth with IDD.
  • Relational skills with all age groups from all demographics.
  • Resource management including finances, budgets, allocated time, and expendables.

Education/Experience

  • Minimum of an associate degree or equivalent; bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Extended education encouraged.
  • Advanced IDD experience is preferred.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is preferred.

Notes:

  • This position is full-time and salaried for 40 hours per week.
  • This position reports to the TTYL area director.
