College Staff Associate — Chula Vista, CA

San Diego Metro Young Life is seeking a new full-time staff associate to work closely with the associate regional director and the local metro area to launch and grow direct ministry at Southwestern College (located in Chula Vista, Calif.). Southwestern College was founded in 1961 and now has an active enrollment of 25,000+ students.

We are seeking a full-time staff person willing to:

  • Lead, model, and develop active ministries at Southwestern College.
  • Partner with local churches, schools, and others passionate about college students.
  • Build community among college students, faculty, families, neighbors, donors, and volunteers.
  • Encourage a culture of diversity, equity, and belonging.
  • Develop and raise sufficient financial support as an individual and on behalf of the organization.
  • Have fun and help others have fun.

There are vibrant ministries with Young Life and WyldLife on campus nearby in the South Bay with a local Young Life ministry and staff that have been active in the surrounding area for more than 20 years. The ideal candidate will help develop a devoted volunteer team (of which there are several current prospects and engaged advocates), maintain core teams of volunteer student leaders, increase financial support, and increase collaboration with local churches and community partners.

This is a great role for an ambitious self-starter and visionary who is excited about sharing the Good News of Jesus and discipling young adult leaders in the area.

Responsibilities:

College Student Outreach and Discipleship

  • Regular and consistent time on campus. Building relationships and introducing students to Jesus.
  • Leadership training: Recruiting, equipping, and training student leaders.
  • Leading leaders: Assist in leading and developing a student leadership team who are following Jesus, building community, and serving students at Southwestern.
  • Excellence in implementing clubs, large groups (Campaigners for college students), and events.
  • Summer assignments (assigned by the region).

Ministry Leadership

  • Coordination and administration for weekly events, clubs, large groups, and leadership team gatherings.
  • Vision cast and implement a social media presence.
  • Plan and prepare to speak at Young Life College events.
  • Attendance and participation in monthly committee/staff meetings/gatherings.
  • Other administrative duties as assigned by the associate regional director.

Personal Fundraising

  • Personally fundraise $30,000-$50,000 per year (this position is also funded with an additional $45,000 for year 1 and $35,000 for year 2 as part of the California Plan's Fast Ships Initiative).
  • Create a team for prayer and personal support.
  • Communicate progress to donors and potential donors.
  • Regular meetings with a personal fundraising coach.

Training

  • This is a training role, aiming to prepare the staff associate for a full-time director position.
  • Participate in all missionwide, regional, and area trainings.
  • Complete Leadership 1 and 2 Training.
  • Attendance at New Staff and Winter Training.
  • Present at Young Life College Training and the annual Young Life College Summit.
  • Monthly regional staff associate training.
  • Discernment of calling.
  • Other training as assigned by the region and metro area.

Qualifications:

  • A vital and growing relationship with Jesus.
  • Desire and ability to minister to college-age students and adults.
  • Ability and heart to collaborate and serve on a team.
  • Minimum of a four-year college degree before the start date.
  • College student ministry experience preferred.
  • Strong administrative skills, adaptability, and ability to multi-task.
  • Proficiency in applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, Google, etc.
  • A desire and passion to discern calling into full-time ministry in Young Life.

Notes:

This position is part of a unique two-year leadership development track designed to give opportunities for leaders to "learn from the best" in Young Life as they discern their calling into full-time vocational ministry. This position is funded with an $80,000 grant to be split over two years ($45k in Year One and $35k in Year Two). There will be opportunities to stay in the area after the two-year grant period concludes or to also look at other full-time ministry opportunities within the mission of Young Life should you be successful and feel called to the mission.
